How does google think, and why does it matter?


Everyone knows about google.  Do you know what made them more successful than other search engines?

It is the way they think.

Imagine if you went into Best Buy looking for a computer monitor and the sales person kept showing you photos of monitors, monitor stands, monitor covers, monitor cables, but no monitors.  You would be frustrated and walk out the door.  In the olden days (20 years ago) the same thing would happen if you were searching for computer monitors on Alta Vista (remember them?)  All kinds of stuff would populate your screen that had nothing to do with what you were looking for.  It was a frustrating experience.  Then google came along and figured out how to take the frustration out of the searching experience.


They accomplished this by a term they refer to as “relevance”.  Googles product is content.  And they want you to see content that is most relevant to what you are searching for, because that makes you happy and if you are happy you will be a lifelong customer.  They figured out how to do this and wiped out the competition.

Another way that google thinks is on the other side of the coin.  If you searched on google and only 1 or 2 results showed up, you would not be happy.  They would not have enough product to keep you as a customer.  So google needs content (product).  If you donate product (post content online) google grabs it and adds it to their database to show in search results.  Google rewards you by putting you closer to the top of the search results for providing product to them on a regular basis.  Google also considers your business to be more relevant because you are engaging in the online process, sharing and posting stuff that makes the internet work and that makes them happy.
